Health warning

August 31st, 2007

I’m blogging when drunk …

But, as the Romans used to say, in vino veritas … and I remember going to a play in the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow (is it still there, Jack?), probably by 7:84, whose thesis appeared to be that drink, basically, allowed Scots people to express emotion. We’re not, normally, allowed to let people see how we feel (it’s against our religion), but if we’ve drunk something alcoholic (try spelling that after 3 glasses of wine), then it’s the drink speaking, not us.

And I’m making up for a leaving do at lunchtime to-day where I didn’t allow myself a glass of wine (or beer) because I was on the desk this afternoon.

Talking

I seem to have done a lot of it recently – with my counsellor, with my boss, even with colleagues …

… just talk amongst yourselves … apparently, I have nothing more to say …

5 words

August 28th, 2007

I think that I misunderstood the rules of Deeleea’s 5 words flickr project. I thought that I just had to submit 5 photos encapsulating the meanings of 5 words (of my choosing), but reading the group introduction leads me to conclude that the words will be pre-selected, the challenge then being to find (or take) 5 photos corresponding to those 5 words. But since I’ve trolled through my own photos to find 5 which, when I uploaded them, prompted one word titles, I shall post them here – and, maybe, if permitted, in due course, submit them to the group.

What to blog about?

August 27th, 2007

I wasn’t at Greenbelt. On Saturday, we (wife, me, daughter, and son) visited my mum (known as granny). It took us 2 trains to get there, and 3 to get back – no complaints there – son enjoys trains – but I would have preferred not to have had to change at Waverley (of course, we could have got off at Haymarket …). It was quite nice that on the outward journey we went north and then west, while coming home we went south and then east – we were given a tour of central Scotland at no extra charge (although I reckon that going by train is definitely more expensive than it should be).

Yesterday, I gave blood. What I particularly appreciated was the way that the chap looking after me explained everything to daughter who was accompanying me – even allowed her to squish the bag of blood.

To-day was counselling session number three. Tiring. Difficult. Still trying to find the light at the end of the tunnel. Which reminds me of something which happened when we were on the train. The lights had gone off, and we entered the tunnel just east of Waverley Station. Complete darkness. Was cool to be able to turn on the light with which my mobile phone is handily equipped. Which segues neatly into the photo taken this very morning for the 365 project (taken by a combination of natural light and the phone light):

[Please note that I am not a fan of the "Footprints" poem - it just happens to be fixed to the cupboard door in front of me.]

[Oh, and to-day I said "Hi" to Dave Benson Phillips ...]

Support

Deeleea asked (on Flickr, actually, but here seems a better place to respond) for feedback concerning my gorillaPod (please forgive the cutesy capitalisation – it’s just my way, these days). So I thought that you wouldn’t mind a wee picture of it in action (well, not actually in action, because if the camera was sitting on it, then I wouldn’t have been able to take the picture):

I have to confess that my enthusiasm for the 365 Days project is wavering somewhat – I feel that I’m in danger of taking the same photo 300 times. We’ll see …

OK, I’m breaking a rule

August 18th, 2007

Specifically, don’t blog when you’re drunk. And, yes, it is a bit early in the day to be drunk – in fact, technically, I’m probably not drunk, just the combination of tiredness, and having drunk half a bottle of wine …

The holiday was good. Possibly harder work than ideally – I can’t remember a holiday that was also a rest, which theoretically it is supposed to be – otherwise, when, pray, do I rest? But it was good. Port Ban is an incredible place. The people who own it are Christians, and it feels like a Christian community – people are incredibly friendly. That said, the significant meetings generally took place through our children – they seem to be able to make friends in a way that we adults can’t.

I’ve been back at work for a week. I can blame the fact that I haven’t achieved much on the other fact that the windows in my office were being replaced. I’ve been hot-desking – frequently on a tablet PC that is considerably past its use-by. I’ve had my first session with the counsellor, and am encouraged.

Our children go back to school on Tuesday. At this time of year I always think of Jeremiah 8:20 (honestly! Ralph Vaughan Williams included it in “Dona Nobis Pacem”, which I once rehearsed, and it’s stuck in my mind ever since):

The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved. (King James)

Of course, we are saved (aren’t we?), just that it doesn’t always feel like it …

Jura, from Port Ban

Not sure how you’ll hear about the holiday – possibly in dribs and drabs. Extremely impressed by the set-up at Port Ban!
